The Men's Project:
Photographic Images of Men

Site Image Map

Between March and September 1999 The Men's Project worked in partnership with staff and young men from the Southern Education and Library Board (SELB) Youth Service to produce a series of black and white photographs which focused on the theme "Images of Men".

This exhibition was launched on Tuesday 12th October 1999 in the "Tank Gallery", Belfast. Our special guest speaker was Dr Bill Smith, then Head of the Health and Social Policy Unit in what was the Department of Health and Social Services.

It comprises a set of fifty-five black and white photographs (approximately 12'' x 16'' glass framed). These present a broad range of images of men in Northern Ireland e.g. young/old, disabled/able-bodied, ethnic groups, at work, at home, as fathers, socialising, at risk ... Funding for the project came from an anonymous donor and the launch was supported by the Tank Gallery, Belfast.

The exhibition has been on a continuous tour of the north of Ireland since its launch and has visited art centres, community premises, workplaces, men's conferences - ensuring maximum exposure to people from all backgrounds. The images have also been developed into a group work discussion pack which is now on sale from The Men's Project.

All of the photos (including some additional ones not shown as part of the exhibition) are available for copyright-free downloading from this site by clicking on the "View Photographs" link below. However, if you wish to use this resource in your own work, we ask that you acknowledge its source.
