This project had a number of distinct phases:
- Collaborative work with two youth workers (Eamonn Fleming and Brendan
Mc Cann) working in the SELB Youth Service's Craigavon Division.
- Utilising the technical expertise and creative energy of Terry Mc
Collum, the SELB Youth Service's Project Worker for Photography/Video.
- Holding brainstorming sessions with a group of young men
(aged 14-23 years) who had already been involved in young men's programmes.
- Exploring: "The roles, behaviours and characteristics of men in
Northern Ireland" with this group. They were encouraged to discuss what
the situation is at present and what they would like it to be/think it
should be in the future.
- The Men's Project collated the data generated from all its field visits
(to a range of projects interested in men's issues across the north of
Ireland) and supplemented the feedback from the young men.
- All of this information was used to compile a list of possible
photographic images that would capture men in diverse situations and roles.
- A core group of young men was formed to bring this project
'from the drawing board' to reality.
- This core group worked, primarily, alongside Terry Mc Collum.
They planned what photographic shots they required and where they would
get them; learned the basic skills of photography; modelled for a few
"difficult" scenarios; experienced how to develop films; experimented
with developing prints ...
